Harvesting Connections

A Timeline of Impactful Moments Uniting Members and Farmers for Better Living

Welcome to Seasonal Roots, where the roots of our mission run deep, connecting you with local farmers like Justin McKenney from Sion House Farms. Tending to fields that have been in his family since the 1920s, Justin exemplifies the dedication to quality and locality that defines our approach. Our aim is simple: to deliver the freshest, most flavorful local produce directly to your doorstep. No distant imports or chemically treated fare here – just the vibrant bounty of nearby farms, harvested with care and delivered within days.

Join us on a journey through some of the moments that have defined our commitment to bringing better living to our members while nurturing the bonds between farmers and consumers.

Our Search for Local Carrots!

In 2011, we faced a challenge in sourcing local carrots amidst Virginia’s red clay soil. The search led us to the Flores Family and their 100-acre plot near the Chesapeake Bay, where the sandy soil proved ideal for a variety of vegetables, including our beloved carrots. For over a decade, the Flores family has been a cornerstone of our supply chain, providing not just carrots, but a diverse array of produce, including six varieties of sweet potatoes. Today, our members relish the sweetness and earthiness of locally grown carrots, a winter favorite that embodies the essence of seasonal eating.

A Nourishing Connection

In 2013, one of our members embarked on a culinary journey to recreate a cherished family recipe passed down through generations. Despite her efforts, the dish never quite captured the flavors of her grandmother’s kitchen. It wasn’t until she sourced fresh Kennebec potatoes from a local farmer that she unlocked the secret to perfection. This heartwarming tale reminds us that food isn’t just nourishment; it’s a connection to our past, a celebration of love, and a testament to the power of fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

Weathering the Storm Together

The challenges of 2020 tested us all, but they also underscored the resilience of our community. As the pandemic disrupted supply chains and routines, Seasonal Roots emerged as a beacon of stability, providing essential sustenance while supporting local farmers facing unprecedented obstacles. In times of uncertainty, our commitment to delivering fresh, locally sourced food remained unwavering, reaffirming our role as a trusted partner in nourishing both body and spirit.

A Fresh Perspective on Menu Development

In 2023, the addition of Nathan and Emily to our team injected new energy into our approach to menu development. They’ve brought a fresh energy for sourcing seasonal favorites, introducing exciting new offerings like Romanescu for the fall season and winter strawberries. They epitomize our ongoing commitment to culinary excellence and community collaboration.

As we reflect on our journey, we extend heartfelt gratitude to our valued members and dedicated local farmers. Together, we have cultivated a vibrant ecosystem rooted in sustainability, community, and flavor. With every harvest, we sow the seeds of a brighter, tastier future, where the bonds between farmers and consumers grow stronger, one season at a time. Thank you for being a part of our story.
