Seasonal Roots

Happier, healthier homes and communities start here.

In 2011, Seasonal Roots began uniting people in Virginia and Maryland with local farmers and artisans to cultivate a community that not only eats better, but lives better too.

We believe there’s power in our interconnectedness. Unlike a national corporation, our partners and team members live in, and are committed to, the neighborhoods we serve. Together, we share a collective vision of making better food options accessible to everyone. This makes a positive impact on our local economy, the global environment, and our individual quality of life.

We’re excited that our community continues to grow and that more people are understanding the benefits of eating seasonally. Whether you’re a household of one, many, or somewhere in between, we invite you to join us and taste the difference of eating seasonally.

Duane Slyder

Duane Slyder

•  Founder  •

Our founder, Duane Slyder, grew up in rural Nebraska and Virginia, helping to raise cattle and horses, and grow produce in his family’s garden. Later, as a husband and father living in the suburbs, Duane was curious about where the food he fed his family came from. He learned that most grocery store produce is shipped in from far away – selected for high yield and long shelf life, not for flavor or nutrition.

Duane recognized an opportunity to support local farmers using sustainable practices, as well as enjoy better tasting, more nutritious food. His vision came to life by creating an online farmers market offering fresh, local produce and unique artisan goods that we know today as Seasonal Roots.

Duane developed a business model that isn’t just good for our local farmers and artisans, but for us, as a community. By supporting people who have dedicated their lives to growing the most flavorful, nutrient-dense produce and humanely raising happy, healthy animals for meat, eggs, and dairy, we all benefit.

While food is the primary focus of Seasonal Roots, Duane believes that people are – and always will be – the heart of Seasonal Roots.

Sam Krivanec

Sam Krivanec

•  Executive Product Developer  •

Sam Krivanec, our Executive Product Developer, has been with Seasonal Roots for over 10 years. In addition to overseeing our packing operations, he develops our weekly menu and maintains relationships with all of our local farmers and artisans. Fruit is his favorite Seasonal Roots category, followed closely by our expansive selection of local, pastured and grass-fed meats. Sam’s favorite meal to cook is rice and veggies with either grilled chicken or fish. Outside of work, he’s proud to be a part of Steel City Connections, a group of rabid Pittsburgh Steelers fans who come together to raise money for the Children’s Hospital.

Patty Loyde

Patty Loyde

•  Chief Number Cruncher  •

Patty Loyde, our Chief Number Cruncher, began working at Seasonal Roots as a Market Manager in 2012. She is thrilled to play a role in helping local farmers and artisans and has learned many benefits of eating seasonally – like how delicious strawberries are when eaten only in summer. Patty’s favorite meal is what she calls a Harvest Bowl made of different fresh grains, greens and veggies that leaves her feeling healthy and fulfilled. When not further evolving her culinary skills, she is happily involved in local activities that include tennis, book club and the Fan Woman’s Club.

Leslie McCarey

Leslie McCarey

•  Director of marketing & customer experience  •

Leslie McCarey, our Director of Marketing & Customer Experience, loves working for Seasonal Roots because she believes it tastes so much better to eat fresh and local. She enjoys receiving new and different items every week. Her favorite meal to cook is chili with Seasonal Roots’ sustainable meat and she’s a big fan of the Greek bowl. When not promoting all things seasonal, Leslie can be found running or supporting a variety of community organizations such as Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Connor’s Heroes, and Feed More.

Jamila Talbot

Jamila Talbot

•  Director of teams  •

Jamila Talbot, our Chief Director of Teams, believes in the power of community, culture and of course, eating seasonally. Her main job is to look after the incredible people who come into contact with our Seasonal Roots members. She is a calm leader who brings joy to our Market Managers, who in turn, bring joy to our members. She loves many menu items, but Lacinato kale and pink lady apples top her produce list. For the best use of veggies, she recommends making soups – versatile and delicious!

Landis Wine

Landis Wine

•  Head of Operations  •

Landis Wine, our Head of Operations, has been with Seasonal Roots for several years, inspired by doing meaningful work with good people. In addition to the healthy and delicious produce, his favorite Seasonal Roots item is SoulSmith Kombucha (fermented tea). When not whipping up delicious home cooked meals like vegan curry, Landis records, produces and performs music with a variety of folks in the community.

The Hub Hustle

This is where the magic happens, folks. The Hub is our central packing facility where all the produce and goods of our local farmers and artisans converge. Needless to say, it’s a busy place! Once everything arrives, our packers get to work putting together weekly custom boxes of seasonal goodness for each and every one of our awesome members.
